I, III, V, VI e VII.

This publication completes the entire oeuvre of cello sonatas composed and published in London by Emanuel Siprutini between 1756 and 1774 as Op. I, III, V, VI and VII. Born in Holland or Portugal into the Jewish family of Shiprut, he came to England following the “Jewish naturalization act” established in 1753 by King George II of England, settling in London as a wine merchant, virtuoso cellist and cello teacher. Little information about him comes from the letters of Leopold Mozart, who met him in London in 1764 during his stay in England with his prodigious son, still a child. John Crosdill, the most famous English cellist of the eighteenth century, was Siprutini’s student until his debut as a concert performer.

Combined with the previous recording of Opus III and V, this publication completes the oeuvre of cello sonatas by Emanuel Siprutini. Born in a Jewish family, perhaps in Hol-land, he arrived in England following the “Jewish naturalization act” established in 1753 by King George II of En-gland, and he settled in London as a wine merchant, concert performer and cello teacher, having among his students John Crosdill, the most famous British cellist of the eighteenth century. Leopold Mozart met Siprutini in 1764, during his stay in England. Struck by the cellist’s talent, he tried to convince him to convert to Catholicism, but Emanuel remained serenely Jewish. Between 1756 and 1775 he published four books of cello sonatas which the Mozarts certainly owned, as one might think by finding fragments and ideas in Wolfgang’s most beautiful works.

ENGLISH VERSION

Of the birth and studies of Emanuel Siprutini we know nothing, except that the Italianization of his Hebrew name, Shiprut, would seem to indicate, if anything, the belonging to an italian school and style, if only for con-venience (Italian cellists were the most appreciated). Around 1750 there are records of his concerts in Holland, where he was also active as a wine merchant, and few years later he settled in London as a concert performer and cello teacher. Leopold Mozart met him in 1764 while visiting England, and struck by his talent tried to convince him to convert to Christianity. Emanuel refused and remained serenely Jewish, cellist and wine trader. He left seven books of sonatas for the cello, which the Mozarts certainly possessed, as is to be believed, finding traces and shreds of ideas in the works of Wolfgang.
